Bastyr to present 'Growing Healthy Families' herb and food fair June 4
The 13th annual Bastyr University Herb and Food Fair, themed "Growing Healthy Families," will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4 and is free and open to the public. The theme includes an emphasis on the numerous ways herbs, nutrition and other natural modalities can support the health and wellness of families.
Keynote speakers will be:
• Chanchal Cabrera, an herbalist, aromatherapist, horticultural therapist, chair of the Botanical Medicine Department at Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine, specialist in orthomolecular nutrition and author of "Fibromyalgia: A Journey toward Healing."
• Cynthia Lair, a whole-food chef, a faculty member at Bastyr University and the University of Washington, author of "Feeding the Whole Family: Recipes for Babies, Young Children and their Parents" and the inspiration behind the online cooking show "Cookus Interruptus."
Other regional and national experts will present talks and workshops on herbs, nutrition and topics related to natural medicine and healthy lifestyles throughout the day.
Additionally, a variety of vendors will sell food, beverages, topical herbal preparations, dried teas, bath infusions, herb-related artwork and crafts. Herb and other plant starts from Bastyr's organic garden will be on sale, including medicinal and culinary herbs from around the world. The medicinal herb garden and reflexology path will both be open and available for all to experience.
Proceeds from the Herb and Food Fair benefit Bastyr University students by contributing to the university's garden improvements and providing funding to purchase supplies for its herb- and food-cultivating classes.
Event visitors can park free at the Kenmore Park & Ride at 7346 N.E. Bothell Way and take the free Bastyr shuttle directly to the Bastyr Herb & Food Fair; the bus runs every 15 minutes all day from 9:30 a.m. until 5:45 p.m. Limited parking will also be available on campus for a $5 fee.
