Students from Kenmore and Northshore junior high schools and Bear Creek and Shelton View elementary schools competed in MATHCOUNTS chapter competitions in February. Some earned the opportunity to advance to the state competition on March 16 at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond.

Students from Kenmore Junior High School and Shelton View Elementary School competed at the North Chapter competition Feb. 23 at the Conway School in Mount Vernon. The Kenmore Junior High School team of Steven Tanner, Edward Yang, Alex Zhou and Jason Zhu placed first in the team category and will advance to the state competition.

The Shelton View team of Kirill Filimonov, Pranathi Guddanti, Harrison Jin, Dorothy Lu, Tejas Raj, Brian Xie and Andrew Zhao placed fifth at the competition. Shelton View students Dorothy Lu and Harrison Jin will advance to the state individual competition.

Teams from Northshore Junior High School and Bear Creek Elementary School competed in the Lake Washington Chapter competition Feb. 16 at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash. The Northshore Junior High School team of Seong Hong, Richard Lu, Michael Paderno and Eric Zhu placed third at the competition and will also advance to the state competition.

The Bear Creek team consisted of Rishabh Jain, Hafsa Khan, Kushal Khangaonkar, Emma Long, Samuel Lucia, Michelle Morris, Daniel Ng, Shreya Senthil, James Soetedjo, Jackson Subcleff, Varshita Vegineti and Ethan Wu. The team performed well, but did not move on to state.

MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school (grades 6–8) coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests.
