City of Kenmore Summer Concert Series to host the Polyrhythmics
Find your rhythm at Kenmore’s Summer Concert Series by listening to some funky, Afro-beat music playing Thursday, July 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Saint Edward State Park.
Polyrhythmics is a Seattle band that has a sound described as modern Afro-beat and syncopated horn driven funk, with hypnotic grooves and creative melodic sounds. The Afro-beat genre is a mix of different genres such as Nigerian music, jazz, funk, and chanting vocals. The main creator of this genre, Fela Kuti, used the music to revolutionize the musical structure and political context of Nigeria. Afro-beat became popularized in Africa in the 1970s. The sounds you can hear in this genre include, saxophone, flute, trombone, trumpet, bass, keys, percussion, drums and guitar.
The Polyrhythmics are named appropriately. Polyrhythm is defined as the simultaneous use of two or more conflicting rhythms; furthermore the rhythms do not derive from another. The band members have not only created their music with polyrhythm but their background as well. The founding members Ben Bloom and Grant Schroff have different music backgrounds. Bloom performed with local artists and gained skills as well as a following that way. Schroff attended Cornish College of the Arts. The two have blended their musical knowledge well to form a band that creates melodic funk.
Since the band started in 2010, they have released two albums. The Polyrhythmics self released their first album, “Labrador”. Their second album, “Libra Stripes” was released on Kept Records in 2013. Popularity for the band started with their first hits, “Pink Wasabi” and “Klompton”. Following their first hits Seattle Magazine named The Polyrhythmics the “Best Band in Seattle” in 2011.
Some notable bands and artists that The Polyrhytmics have played with include Allen Stone, String Cheese Incident, Sam Bush, Orgone, Choklate, Monophonics and Fishbone.
Enjoy your summer night with a band that gives that feel good vibe. The Polyrhythmics will show you that groovy melodic funk is just what you need to relax. The show starts at 6 p.m. on July 17 at Saint Edward State Park.
