Cascadia student magazine wins national award

Cascadia College’s creative arts magazine Yours Truly tied for second place in the 2017 Community College Humanities Association’s literary arts competition.

The competition highlights student work from across the nation and is an opportunity for students to explore the publishing and promotion process, a press release states.

Yours Truly students begin their work on the magazine in fall quarter with a call for submissions. In spring quarter, the magazine is printed and distributed at an annual launch event. The publication features poetry, prose and visual art from Cascadia students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members.

“Taking this course really pushes you out of your comfort zone. It’s like taking a real job, but instead of a salary, you get a grade,” Cascadia student Sam Kim said in the release.

Kim plans to major in communications and marketing.

Students study common college magazine practices, develop submission guidelines and determine roles and responsibilities on the magazine’s editorial team. During classes, students develop valuable skills in publication budgeting, scheduling and project management.

Yours Truly is a collaborative effort,” Courtney Putnam, faculty adviser for Yours Truly, said in the release. “Through open, engaged work, students learn the value of the arts. It’s a joy for me to witness how students thrive when given a real-world project and permission to express their own creativity.”

Yours Truly has put out a call to the community for submissions of prose, poetry or visual art beginning. Last day for submissions is Dec. 31.
