On April 22, students at the Northshore School District’s alternative school, the Secondary Academy for Success (SAS), heard about green job opportunities from James Venable, remote operations center manager for McKinstry, a Seattle-based company that designs, builds, operates and maintains facilities for commercial and industrial customers.

During the presentation, SAS students were awarded Hershey bars and energy-saving light bulbs for correctly answering Earth Day-related questions.

President Obama called McKinstry a model for the nation in energy-efficient construction and green-job creation.

Jobs used to be categorized as either white collar or blue collar. But a third type of job — a green-collar job — is one that helps put America on the path to a cleaner, more energy-efficient future. One report by the RAND Corporation and University of Tennessee found that if 25 percent of all American energy were produced from renewable sources by 2025, we would generate at least 5 million new green jobs.
