A wholly owned subsidiary of Safeway Inc., Property Development Centers (PDC), has announced it will begin construction this summer on approximately 13 acres in the Canyon Park area of Bothell.

The long-stalled plans call for a 150,000-square-foot shopping center to be anchored by a new Safeway. Property Development projects an opening in 2011.

Dubbed by Property Development as Lakeside at Canyon Park, the center will sit on currently vacant property on the southwest corner of 240th Street and Bothell-Everett Highway. The project will include seven retail buildings in addition to the Safeway location.

"We are excited to begin this project and bring to the people of Bothell and the Canyon Park area the superior shopping experience, convenience and retail variety that they need and deserve," David Zylstra, chief operating officer of PDC, said in a press release.

PDC officials were not immediately available for further comment.

According to PDC, the Canyon Park Safeway will be over 50,000 square feet and will feature full-service seafood, meat and deli departments, as well as a full-service bakery and a Starbucks location.

PDC said the Safeway also will feature expanded organic and conventional produce departments, expanded beer and wine selections and a full-service pharmacy.

"We have been serving the Bothell market continuously for nearly 60 years and we look forward to extending that record through this important project," said Safeway Seattle Division President Greg Sparks.
