Bothell man, 72, died while hiking near Spada Lake

Search and rescue teams found him quickly, but he was already dead on Greider Lakes Trail.

GOLD BAR — A Bothell man died Saturday while hiking near Spada Lake.

David J. Matthews, 72, was on the Greider Lakes Trail when he had a medical issue. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team and volunteers, including a helicopter search unit, went to find him. But when they arrived, he was already dead.

Identification of the man, and the cause and manner of his death, were pending from the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

This summer has been a busy one for search-and-rescue groups in Snohomish County. On Sept. 14, a 50-year-old Camano Island man was hiking down from Vesper Peak when he had a heart attack and needed to be rescued by helicopter. In late August, two men were lost for five days near Darrington. Since 2016, the sheriff’s office has taken part in more than 1,000 search and rescue missions, totaling more than 47,000 hours.
