Bothell teen among three who died in crash near Lynnwood

A Bothell teen was among three teenagers who died in a collision around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning in Lynnwood.

Mikayla Sorenson, 15, was in a Kia Sorrento with three other people when the vehicle, traveling northbound on Alderwood Mall Parkway, struck and drove underneath a parked semi tractor trailer in the 16900 block, according to Shari Ireton with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to Sorenson, Landon Staley, 16, and Travin Nelson-Phongphiou, 16, died in the collision. Both teens were from Everett, according to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to the ME’s office, the teens’ cause of death was blunt force injuries and the manner of death for all three was ruled as an accident.

Ireton said the three teens died at the scene.

The fourth occupant in the vehicle is a 15-year-old female who was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. As of Wednesday morning, she was listed as in stable condition.

Ireton said it is legal for trucks to park trailers in the designated parking areas along Alderwood Mall Parkway. However, the trailer involved in this collision was not parked in the correct direction, as the front of the trailer was facing oncoming traffic. This is a civil parking infraction, she said.

Following the crash, the road between SR-525 and 164th Street Southwest was closed for several hours Wednesday morning for the investigation, including during the morning commute.
