Northshore Junior High Science Olympiad team earns 22nd at nationals

The Northshore Junior High School Science Olympiad team placed 22nd out of 60 teams at the National Science Olympiad competition held at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

Peter Lie and Ryan Nelson earned fourth for Road Scholar; Steven Zhang and Peter Lie earned fifth for Dynamic Planet; and Steven Lu and Kai Smith earned fifth for Bottle Rockets.

The team faced adversity on many fronts, from starting bottle rockets at 6 a.m. due to an impending thunderstorm, to appealing the judges’ decision and winning their appeal, to having to fix broken equipment at the last minute, to waiting for a track incorrectly measured to be recalibrated before performing, according to a Northshore School District release.

“The students demonstrated ingenuity and grace under pressure,” team advisor Edie Lie said. “It was a wonderful experience, and we’re grateful that we were able to attend.”
