Northshore School District adds transgender students to new equity policy

The Northshore School District Board of Directors approved a gender equity policy and issued a proclamation regarding inclusiveness and respectfulness last month.

The proclamation stated the district is “committed to providing and maintaining safe and healthy environments conducive to learning, where all of our students thrive, regardless of their background, language, race, status, gender identity, orientation, religion or other exceptionalities.”

The gender equity policy specifically mentioned transgender students, and emphasized “an inclusive approach” toward official records, restroom and locker room accessibility, sports and other activities. The goal, the policy reads, is to provide all students with an “equal opportunity for learning and achievement.”

The gender equity policy passed with a unanimous vote. Board member Ken Smith made the first motion, which was seconded by Sandy Hayes.
