Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell, who has decided not to seek reelection after representing the 1st Legislative District in the Washington State Senate since 1992, has been awarded an honorary degree in public health by the Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWIT).

McAuliffe has been an advocate and stalwart supporter of LWIT throughout her tenure in the Legislature. At the award ceremony, LWIT leadership praised McAuliffe for playing a pivotal role in the transformation of the school from a technical college into an institute of technology.

“It has been a privilege to be a part of Lake Washington’s growth and development,” McAuliffe said. “This school has transformed itself into a national leader in STEM education and plays an important role in preparing the next generation for the high tech jobs available right here in Washington.”

Founded in 1949, the Lake Washington Institute of Technology offers bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and more than 80 professional certificates in 40 areas of study. More than 3,500 students are enrolled in one of its many programs.

“Not only have I been a fervent supporter of LWIT in the Legislature, but I’ve also had the pleasure as a grandmother to watch five of my grandkids thrive, learn and graduate from LWIT,” McAuliffe said.
