Severe wind storm leaves thousands without power

More than 15,600 Bothell and Kenmore residents were without power today following a severe windstorm which whipped through western Washington left more than 200,000 people without power across the area and more news from across the state.

The Northshore School District is reporting that 19 schools lost power today along with two more which experienced intermittent outages.

Westhill Elementary School in Bothell was evacuated temporarily due to electrical smoke coming from bathrooms in the administration building. District spokeswoman Leanna Albrecht said the fire department investigated, and cleared the school for reentry other than the administration building.

Four trees fell on the roof of Bear Creek Elementary School in Woodinville, which did not puncture the roof and no injuries were reported. Crews are working to clear the trees.

All community events at district schools are cancelled.

 

More than 15,600 Bothell and Kenmore residents were without power today following a severe windstorm which whipped through western Washington left more than 215,000 people without power across the area according the the National Weather Service Seattle branch.

Bothell city officials reported that city hall lost power during the wind storm, as did the University of Washington Bothell.

Statewide, the Washington Emergency Management Division reported major flood levels at the Stillaguamish River at Granite falls with water on the roads and flooding expected in the Silvana areas near Arlington.

Major flood warnings are under effect for the Snohomish River near Monroe and Snohomish according to the National Weather Service.

A landslide blocked State Route 20 between Newhalem and Diablo and closed it until at least tomorrow according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The Department also reported US 2 between Gold Bar and Skykomish was closed due to downed trees and flooding, as well as Skykomish to Deception due to mudslides.

According to the National Weather Service Spokane branch, gusts of wind of up to 77 mph were reported in Spangle. Gust of up to 116 mph were reported at Ski Mission Ridge by KXLY out of Spokane.

Winds in Bothell were expected to reach gusts of up to 44 mph and sustained winds of around 31 mph according to the National Weather Service.
