King County Green Schools Program honors Bothell school for resource conservation

Eight King County schools, including one from Bothell, and two school districts have earned recognition this month for their resource conservation efforts from the King County Green Schools Program, which helps schools and districts engage their students and staff in conservation strategies that help reduce waste, cut garbage disposal costs, and lower energy and water consumption and costs.

“These school districts and schools can be proud of how they’ve involved their students and staff in learning about conservation and improving conservation practices,” said Dale Alekel, King County Green Schools Program manager.

Six schools have been recognized this month as Level One King County Green Schools. One of those six schools was Secondary Academy in Bothell.

In Level One, schools improve their waste reduction and recycling practices. In addition to setting up effective recycling programs, Level One schools establish at least one paper reduction practice, one lunch waste reduction practice, and one practice involving durable products.

Secondary Academy was named a Level One school.

Many participating schools report lower garbage disposal costs after reducing waste and recycling.

The two school districts recognized were Bellevue and Issaquah.
