State senators in Olympia paused for a moment of silence this afternoon to remember the people of Nepal, who have suffered greatly as a result of a catastrophic earthquake in April.

The moment of silence took place while the Senate voted to approve a resolution honoring victims and survivors of the quake.

“We must keep the victims of the Nepal earthquake and their families in our thoughts and in our prayers,” said Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell, sponsor of the resolution. “Many beautiful, ancient temples have been destroyed by this disaster. However, the greatest suffering has occurred in the rural areas where thousands have lost their lives and even more have been injured.”

The 1st Legislative District and Greater Bothell Area is home to a large Nepalese population, many of whom have family and friends living in Nepal who were impacted by this disaster.

“I have constituents of the 1st Legislative District who are in Nepal right now helping victims restore their lives and providing support for those in need,” said McAuliffe. “I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the two young Washington students who were killed by the quake.”

The Senate unanimously approved the resolution.
