Songwriter group to hold showcase to benefit incoming Kirkland shelter

Members of Songwriters in Seattle, are hosting a song showcase at the Den Coffee Shop in Bothell to benefit the construction of the New Bethlehem Project homeless shelter in Kirkland.

Songwriters in Seattle is a nonprofit organization with more than 3,000 members dedicated to the education of musicians and cultural enrichment of the Pacific Northwest region. The organization strives to grow the musical opportunities and public support structure for the creative community.

Songwriters in Seattle hosts a few showcases each year.

Carmen Zullo, a local songwriter and guitarist, is one of the almost dozen singer-songwriters who will be performing at the Den this weekend. The showcase will raise awareness of the construction of the New Bethlehem Project’s new homeless shelter that will be breaking ground this spring.

“It’ll be a ‘pass the hat’ type of thing,” Zullo said. “We just really want to raise awareness that this shelter is coming and encourage people to support it.”

Zullo said that he and the other performers have all written songs around the theme of homelessness. One of Zullo’s songs, “New Bethlehem,” encourages the community to come together and support a place that’s working to provide a safe haven for women and children.

The showcase will be from 6-9 p.m. on Feb. 9 at the Den Coffee Shop, 10415 Beardslee Blvd. in Bothell.
