First Kenmore-Cascade distance races for kayaks, canoes to be held this Saturday

The first Kenmore-Cascade distance race will be held on Saturday morning on the Sammamish Slough in Kenmore.
The event is produced by the city of Kenmore and the Kenmore Waterfront Activities Center.
There will be two distances – a 5k and 10k course on the Sammamish Slough. The 5k race will be a single loop of the course, 10k a double loop. There will be a mass start at Squire’s Landing park, heading first upstream, around a turn buoy, and finishing at Squire’s Landing Park.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Entries may be submitted up to and on the day of race, until approximately 2 1/2 hours before the start of the race. Entry fees are $10 per person and due before the start of the race.
Each boat will be assigned a number, which will be provided by the Race Secretary. Numbers are to be mounted on the back deck of the boat, and must be returned after completing the race.
Categories include: K1W, K2W, C1W, C2W, K1M, K2M, C1M, C2M and Va’a/Para.
Age groups (based on paddlers age on January 1, 2014)
• PeeWee – under 12
• Bantam – under 14
• Juvenile – under 16
• Junior – under 18
• Senior – 18 and over
• Masters – 30 and over
Paracanoe categories
• Paracanoe LTA – Legs, Torso, Arms
• Paracanoe TA – Torso, Arms
• Paracanoe A – arms
Parking in Squire’s Landing Park will be reserved for boat trailers. There is a load/unload spot for individuals, but cars will need to be parked on Northeast 175th street or another remote location. Parking is not allowed in the apartment complex.
Squire’s Landing Park is located at 7515 NE 175th St. in Kenmore.
