A year and a half ago, the mother-in-law of Anne Beale Yancey, a Bothell resident, passed away from congestive heart failure.

Yancey’s father-in-law had ended up taking care of her, after choosing not to relocate her to a residential adult family home because there was no place that she felt comfortable.

The Bothell Cougars, with their recent 27-11 loss to Capital last Friday, started a football season 0-3 for the first time under head coach Tom Bainter. The Cougars’ record, however, is a disguised 0-3 as the team took on all three of the top-ranked teams in 4A (Skyline), 3A (Bellevue, ranked No. 5 in the country) and 2A (Capital) in the first three weeks.

For University of Washington Bothell junior Anthony Hopkins, the opportunity to participate in next Saturday’s Seattle Brain Cancer Walk represents the next chapter in his incredible success story.
Four years ago, just after his sophomore year of high school at Bishop Blanchet in Seattle, the Greenwood resident went into surgery at Swedish Hospital to remove an large tumor in his brain.
Since then, it’s been a long, hard road to recovery, but Hopkins hopes his story will inspire others similarly afflicted, to believe that they can beat the disease like he did.

The Inglemoor Vikings, by any stretch of the imagination, are a better football team than their last two season records of 6-4 (2011) and 5-5 (2010) would indicate.

The Bothell High baseball team scored in bunches Thursday afternoon in a 4A Kingco road game against Eastlake, winning 11-2.

The Cougars did all of their scoring in the fourth and sixth innings, plating five and six runs, respectively, to quickly put the game out of reach.

Offensively, Brett Steiner led with three hits, including a double, and two runs scored, with Samuel Lee and Rex Carlin each going 2-for-4 while scoring twice.

Bothell took on Issaquah and Inglemoor matched up against Garfield on Thursday afternoon at 4A Kingco track meets, with a number of Cougars and Vikings turning in winning performances.

For Bothell, Danny Wilson won the 100 meters (11.0 seconds), senior Nick Anthony won the 400 meters by nearly three seconds with a time of 52.6, Dean Willis (2:07.8) won the 800 meters with teammates Dustin Rohde and Nathan Conrad close behind in second and third.

Fresh off the Bothell High baseball program’s first state championship last spring, one would expect the blue-clad boys to be riding a wave of confidence heading into the 2012 season.

The Cougars, however, graduated nearly all of their impact players from last year, including staff aces Brian McAfee – now pitching at Cornell University – and Henry Baillargeon, leaving them with the need to form their own identity.

Playing in their league openers last night, the Inglemoor and Bothell High boys’ soccer teams found the net often, but the Vikings finished with the upper hand in the offensive battle, 5-3.

After trading goals for most of the first half, Inglemoor scored three straight to put the game out of reach.

Even though the state basketball tournament didn’t go the way the Bothell High boys’ team had planned – going two-and-out after Friday’s 83-74 loss to Mount Rainier – the memories of finally making it to the “Big Dance” will last forever.

It had been 15 long, arduous years since the Cougars’ program had last made it to state, and head coach Ron Bollinger, along with his players, relished the opportunity to finally play at the Tacoma Dome.

Bothell’s Brandon Davidson, now in his junior year, is inching closer and closer to his goal of become a state champion like his brother Justin, who turned the trick in 2003 while wrestling for the Cougars.

The younger Davidson placed fifth last year, and went 5-1 this year at the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome to place third in the state at the 152-pound weight class. In the finals, he defeated Bethel’s Trevor Anderson in a thrilling match, 4-3.

Inglemoor senior Mina Tanaka ended her prep gymnastics career with a bang on Saturday at the 4A state gymnastics meet at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall, placing fourth in the bars with a score of 9.125.

On Friday during the preliminary round, Tanaka placed in a tie for fourth place in the all-around with a combined score of 37.35 with another senior, Sam West of Todd Beamer.

The weather outside Juanita High School was relatively calm on Friday night as the Bothell High boys’ basketball team matched up against Issaquah, but inside the gym it was raining three-pointers as the Eagles drained 12 of them on the night, defeating the Cougars 67-54.

The Bothell High boys basketball team (7-5, 11-6) has proven one thing true to its fans this season in 4A Kingco league play — don’t ever leave early.

Never was that truth so evident than on Tuesday night in the Cougar Den, as its second matchup against Northshore rival Inglemoor, much like the first, came down to the final shot in a thrilling 58-56 Bothell victory.

The Inglemoor High wrestling team, a perennial 4A Kingco power, is usually well-represented at the Tacoma Dome’s Mat Classic, the state wrestling tournament.

The 2011-12 season looks to be no exception, as the Viks have a number of talented and hungry varsity returners itching to get on the state medal podium.

“I’ve been really impressed,” said Paul Schulfer, who took over the team this year after longtime coach Kevin Corbett retired from coaching high school wrestling. “It’s a good group. They’re picking up things easily and working really hard.”

Although the Bothell High wrestling team is a little short on numbers this year, the team happens to possess one of the state’s top wrestlers.

The 160-pounder’s name is Brandon Davidson, last year’s fifth-place finisher in the 145-pound class as a sophomore surprise, and according to head coach Scott LaBrash, it just may be the junior’s year.

After the Bothell boys basketball team posted a forgettable 1-14 record in 4A Kingco league play last season, quite a few heads were turned when the team was recently ranked No. 2 in the state heading into the 2011-12 season.

According to longtime head coach Ron Bollinger, however, the hype surrounding his team, and their high preseason ranking, is all legitimate.
