Flying the flags: Bothell’s Minshull is hooked on them, and so are her neighbors and passersby

Meet Lorraine Minshull, or “The Flag Lady,” as neighbors call her.

Like the flags flying on the front porch of the family’s Bothell Waynita Way home, she generates a wave of enthusiasm when discussing just what’s going on out there.

Minshull has been the talk of the block for the last five years when she first mounted a United States flag on the porch. Since then, she’s rotated close to 60 countries’, military and holiday flags every three days.

“Countries where we knew missionaries or friends, or I just think the flag is pretty,” Minshull said of her reasoning for choosing the flags.

Last Wednesday, the Czech Republic flag flew, with the country’s name and capital city of Prague in letters on reader strips.

The country and capital weren’t always listed, until Minshull’s daughter and son-in-law gave her the strips. One church friend noted: “You might as well put the capital out there so we can learn something,” Minshull laughed.

Minshull began collecting flags when her daughter located some while working at a liquidation store. She started with copies of U.S. historic flags and has been scouring eBay for the last few years to obtain more for her arsenal. Garage sales have proven fruitful, as well, with Minshull grabbing old wool Australian and Mexican flags. Army and Navy flags are also in the mix to honor her two grandsons in the military.

People have also come to “The Flag Lady” for favors: Once, she loaned a Kenyan flag to one woman whose grandson needed it to earn 25 extra points on a school report; another time, a lady borrowed an Italian flag for a wedding shower.

Minshull is happy to help residents appreciate flags in any way.

“One family said they drive by, and the kids say, ‘Oh, I wonder which flag is going to be out today,'” she said with a smile.
