Strumming and singing

Quetzal braved Thursday’s rain to perform its traditional fandango and Chicano music to a small crowd at St. Edward State Park. The band is: Martha Gonzalez (vocals, congos, cajon and tarina), Quetzal Flores (vocals and jarana), Eduardo Cierra (vocals, jarana and requinto), Marisol Berrios-Miranda (guiro, quijada and jaubone) and Shannon Dudley (marimbol). Flores and Gonzales formed the successful band — which plays acoustically and electrically, but not on Thursday — in the early 1990s in east Los Angeles. Flores and Gonzalez are currently living in the Seattle area while Gonzalez studies for her Ph.D. in women’s studies at the University of Washington. While here, they’ve recruited the rest of their current group — titled the Seattle Fandango Project — and run music sessions at the UW.
