Beverly Shaw-Starkovich, an Edmonds painter whose colorful, wide-ranging artwork evokes feelings and memories, has been named featured artist for the 2016 Kenmore Art Show.
Her work will be shown in a special exhibit at the 18th annual show, scheduled June 22-26 at Bastyr University. A reproduction of one of her acrylic paintings will appear on the art show poster highlighting this year’s theme of “Playful.”
Shaw-Starkovich’s career has taken her into oil, pastel, watercolor, and most recently acrylic. Her subject matter has transitioned from realistic portraits through landscapes and still life in forms of realism and abstraction. She paints in vivid hues, shapes, and volume using people, places and things.
The artist says her artistic journey has taught her patience.
“While I am still eager to get from the planning stage to actually slapping paint on the canvas, I have learned to take my time and think each process through,” Shaw-Starkovich said. “Often when I have ‘finished” a piece, I hang it on the wall and walk and work around it for weeks or even months, at which time I go back to it. Sometimes I subtract from it, but often, I end up changing it completely.”
Shaw-Starkovich is a member of the Edmonds Art Commission and is active in both the National Association of Women Artists and Women Painters of Washington. Her work can be seen at the NAWA Gallery in New York City, the WPW Gallery in Seattle, The Gallery Bainbridge Arts and Crafts on Bainbridge Island, at Christopher Gallery and Framing in Edmonds, and online at www.fineartamerica.com and www.theshawcollection.com.
The Kenmore Art Show is presented annually by Arts of Kenmore, an all-volunteer 501c3 organization, and is sponsored by Bastyr University with support from the City of Kenmore and 4Culture.
