Bastyr University’s 11th annual Herb & Food Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6 on the university’s main campus in Kenmore.

In keeping with this year’s theme of “Sustainable Nutrition and Healing,” the daylong celebration will include garden tours, a variety of nationally and locally known herb and nutrition speakers, cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts activities for children and live musical entertainment.

The community event, which typically brings more than 3,000 visitors to Bastyr University’s 51-acre campus near the shores of Lake Washington, is free and open to the public. This year’s keynote speakers include: Richo Cech, noted herbal entrepreneur, plant explorer and author; and Kären Jurgensen, a chef instructor at both the Seattle Culinary Academy and the Quillisascut Farm School and founder of the Seattle chapter of Chef’s Collaborative.

Other talks and workshops on herbs, nutrition and topics related to natural medicine and healthy lifestyles will be scheduled throughout the day. Musical performances will also provide ongoing entertainment. Herbs and other plant starts from Bastyr’s organic garden will be sold, including medicinal and culinary herbs from around the world. Along with garden tours, there will be guided walks through the surrounding woods in search of native herbs.

Additionally, Bastyr’s vegetarian cafeteria will be serving entrees, salads and breads, while Bastyr students will sell homemade baked goods and snacks. Hundreds of books on herbs and nutrition will be for sale at the Bastyr University bookstore, which also features publications on natural medicine and healing.

Proceeds from the Herb & Food Fair benefit Bastyr students by contributing to university garden improvements and providing supplies for herb and food cultivating classes.
