A trifecta with Bastyr University connections was among the big winners earlier this week, as the Natural Products Association (NPA) announced its 19th Annual NPA Awards on Tuesday. The NPA Awards highlight individuals and businesses that have made important contributions to the success of the natural products industry.

This year that list includes Bastyr University founding President Emeritus Joseph E. Pizzorno Jr. and Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Clinic (BIORC) Medical Director Leanna Standish, who each won Clinician Awards. Bastyr alumnus Michael T. Murray was given the President’s Award.

According to the NPA, Clinician Awards are presented to licensed health-care practitioners whose work exemplifies the best standards and dedication to responsible holistic, non-invasive and integrative, complementary and alternative medicine modalities.

Standish is also a research professor for the School of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University and serves at the University of Washington as a clinical professor for its School of Public Health and an affiliate research professor in its radiology department.

Pizzorno Jr. is also president of SaluGenecists Inc. and editor of “Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal.” He was appointed by President Clinton in December 2000 to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and by President George W. Bush in November 2002 to the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee. The President’s Award recognizes an individual who has made long-time contributions to the natural products industry, or has made a one-time, uniquely significant impact on the industry.

Murray graduated from Bastyr University in 1985 and currently serves as director of product development and education for Natural Factors, a manufacturer of nutritional and herbal supplements, and president and chief executive of Dr. Murray Natural Living Inc. He has co-authored and authored numerous books, including “Textbook of Natural Medicine,” “Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine,” “The Pill Book Guide to Natural Medicines,” “The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods” and “What the Drug Companies Won’t Tell You and Your Doctor Doesn’t Know.”

Awardees will be honored during Natural Products Association MarketPlace 2012, NPA’s annual trade show and convention, June 14-16 in Las Vegas.
