Bikini baristas like reality TV: a cheap grab at money and attention | Editor’s Notebook

To each his — and her — own. Sure, business is booming at bikini-barista espresso stands, but that doesn’t necessarily mean success to me. Money rolling in may pad the old bank account. However, how does one feel about themselves at the end of the day? Was it all worth it, did you put in your maximum effort, really make a difference out there in the world — or your world?

I’m usually a proponent of someone doing something different and against the grain, but this is not one of those times.

One local bikini-barista stand is right in noting that what you see isn’t any different than what’s on display at the beach. But this isn’t the beach, it’s a business and if you want to be taken seriously, there are other ways of gaining “real” success (good coffee, creative promotions, etc.).

Sure, these are tough economic times and we’ve got to pay the bills, but conducting bikini-barista business is about as uncreative and obvious as one can be. Let’s turn some heads and make some money, no matter how silly we look in the newspaper or on TV. Will you really be proud of yourself in the long run?

Bikini-barista stands are like “reality” TV in my mind, people trying to be stars at any cost. It’s not quality entertainment, it’s wanting to be the talk of the town by shedding your clothes and being overly friendly to customers.

I’m all for people starting a business and succeeding — and working hard in their own way to achieve it — but this way does not work for me.
