Bothell Chamber hosts open house
The Greater Bothell Chamber of Commerce will host its fifth annual open house from 5-7:30 p.m. June 11 at the Monte Villa Farmhouse (3300 Monte Villa Parkway, Bothell). The event will include a limited number of exhibit tables, as well as several food and drink tables.
Auditions for outdoor Shakespeare play
Auditions for the Saint Edward Environmental Learning Center’s (SEELC) outdoor performance of “Midsummer Nights Dream” will take place from 6-8 p.m. June 23-24 at Saint Edward State Park, as well as by appointment. The complete text and list of characters is available online at www.seelc.org. The show will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 19-20 as part of the SEELC’s summer programs at the park.
Hopelink cashes in with movie premiere
The Hopelink social-services agency brought in $25,840 during a premiere showing of “Sex and the City” May 30 at Bellevue’s Lincoln Square Cinemas. More than 240 people, mostly women, attended the event, which was organized by community volunteer Heija Nunn. Proceeds will help Hopelink’s food banks feed north and east King County families over the summer when their children don’t have access to school lunch programs, and also provide homelessness-prevention services.
Guests at the benefit event were treated to continental breakfast, door prizes and goodie bags, provided by a combination of event sponsors including Palomino Restaurant, Lincoln Square Cinemas, Nordstrom at Bellevue Square, Alki Bakery, Tully’s, Kemper Development and the Lucky Strike Lanes bowling alley.
Hot rods, dogs on tap for June 21 event
Evergreen Washelli at Bothell Funeral Home and First Lutheran Church will host a car show and safety fair from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 21. The free-of-charge event will feature cars, bikes and a community picnic with hot dogs. It also includes bike-helmet fitting and blood-pressure screening, as well as demonstrations by the Bothell Fire Department. Bike helmets will be available for $5. Northshore WASL results released
All but 37 of Northshore School District’s 1,611 currently-enrolled high-school seniors have met the reading and writing standards of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL), one of four requirements to graduate from high school beginning this year.
A district analysis shows that the 37 students who did not meet the WASL requirement have not finished other graduation requirements such as earning the mandatory credits, completing a culminating project and creating a high-school-and-beyond plan.
Data from the state shows that 96 percent of Northshore students met WASL requirements, but school-district data puts the number at 98 percent, based upon updated enrollment numbers.
WWU to recognize Bothell’s Allen
Western Washington University will honor Bothell native Daryl Allen as one of the school’s seven Presidential Scholars for 2008 when he graduates with a bachelor of arts degree in accounting June 16. The award goes to students who demonstrate “exceptional scholarship and service to the university and community.”
Allen participated in a two-year church mission in Honduras and used his newly-acquired Spanish skills to help immigrants in Whatcom and Skagit counties as a medical interpreter. He also worked in English-language learner programs and volunteered with The Whatcom Dream, a local nonprofit organization devoted to helping and educating people experiencing financial problems. Allen created The Next Step Scholarship through that program, raising over $1,200 and helping the first recipient return to community college to pursue her associate’s degree in preparation for a career educating autistic children.
Attic Theatre kicks off another production
The Northshore-based Attic Theatre will be presenting Robert Fulghum’s “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” throughout the month of June at Bellevue’s Theater at the Meydenbauer Center (11100 N.E. Sixth St.). The show is directed by Jane Reinhardt and co-directed by Julia Harrison, with musical direction by Sue Timpe.
Performances are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. June 13 with an opening-night gala; at 7:30 p.m. June 14; at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. June 15; at 7:30 p.m. June 18 (pay what you can); at 7:30 p.m. June 19-20; at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. June 21; at 2:30 p.m. June 22.

Corrections
Mistakes appeared in two articles from the June 4 Bothell-Kenmore Reporter.
The last name of Bothell High co-valedictorian Erica Olavarria was misspelled. In addition, a typo appeared in the feature on Inglemoor High student Kurt Wagner. The story indicated that Wagner maintains a 3.0 grade-point average, when he actually has a 3.9.
• The cost of Cascadia Community College’s new Center for Global Learning and the Arts will cost $35 million, not $22 million as reported in the Reporter’s May 28 issue. Also, the building will signify Phase Three of the college’s master plan for development, not Phase Two.
