Through the eyes of the eldest daughter, Katrin, the audience shares in the stories of the dreams and tribulations of the Hansons, a family of Norwegian immigrants in 1910 San Francisco. Katrin steps in and out of the action and tells the audience how she came to write the family stories as an adult, while also playing a part in them as a young woman. Throughout the play, Mama Hanson shepherds her family with a moving mixture of humanity, courage and sheer, motherly strength.

Senior Blair Fraser plays the lead role of Katrin, and senior Talon Bigelow plays the daunting Uncle Chris. James Wilson is the director.

The play’s massive task of backstage and technical work has been under way since September, according to producer Nancy Santiago.

“I Remember Mama” is based on the book “Mama’s Bank Account” by Kathryn Forbes — Katrin in the play. The play’s 1944 Broadway success led first to a 1948 multiple Academy Award-nominated movie, starring Irene Dunne, and then to an early and long-running, live television series in the 1950s.

It plays Jan. 8, 9 and 10 and then Jan. 15 and 17. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. with one matinee performance at 2 p.m. Jan. 17. The box office opens one hour before each show. Tickets are available at the door only — $8 for adults and $6 for students with identification. Doors will open to the theater 30 minutes before show time.
