Bothell one act honored

Bothell High’s one-act showcase “Booby in the Trap” won a major theater award last month in Bellingham. The production notched a triple-superior rating at the annual Washington Thespian Festival held at Western Washington University.

“Booby in the Trap” was one of seven student-directed, one-act plays performed in October 2008 at Bothell High. It was judged and selected as the best play, qualifying it for the state competition.

The moving drama tells the story of a young soldier who discovers he’s triggered a land mine. If he moves, he will die. Throughout the one-act play, scenes move from important moments in the soldier’s life being replayed as his life flashes before his eyes to working with fellow soldiers who try to free him unharmed.

Junior Kevin Lin portrays the soldier, and senior Julia Shelden plays his girlfriend and then his wife in poignant scenes scattered throughout the short play.

The group of more than 15 students and their student director, senior Logan McCuistion, has now qualified to compete at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Neb., in late June. The festival will feature more than 50 productions presented by schools from throughout North America and abroad, as well as several workshops and university audition opportunities.

The students need to raise $15,000 by May 1 to send the group to Lincoln.
