Police are holding a 56-year-old Bothell man on $30,000 bail after he was arrested for making threats to blow up Sea-Tac International Airport.

He made his first appearance in King County Superior Court on Wednesday. The Reporter is not naming the man because he has not been formally charged.

The man was in the main south terminal on Tuesday afternoon when he picked up a pay phone and called 9-1-1 to report where he was, according to probable cause documents.

“Listen up closely,” he told the 9-1-1 operator. “I have approximately eight to 10 pounds of homemade explosives taped to my chest.”

The Bothell man asked for the time and the operator told him 1:07 p.m., the documents continue.

“I will blow myself up at 1:30 p.m.,” the man said before hanging up the phone.

Port of Seattle police arrived on the scene a short time later and contacted the man outside the Seattle’s Best Coffee at the airport. The man restated that he had a bomb and was taken into custody.

The man later allegedly confessed to authorities that he made up the threat because he was depressed and wanted to go to federal prison, according to court documents.

Police list the man’s occupation as “fisherman” and his ex-wife as an emergency contact in court documents.

The man is scheduled for a court hearing on Friday where he could be formally charged.
