Bothell didn’t have the largest contingent of swimmers at the 4A boys swim and dive championships, yet that didn’t stop the Cougars from walking away with two individual titles at Saturday’s round of finals in Federal Way.
In consecutive events, Bothell’s Jeffrey Goong won the 4A dive championship with a top score of 379.15, and Andrew Oh claimed the 100 fly crown with a winning time of 50.46 seconds.
“I’m excited for the guys. They worked really, really hard,” Bothell coach Jordan Redford said. “Jeffrey puts in a ton of hours diving and thinking about it and preparing for it. He’s been anxious and excited all year for this, and he absolutely earned it. Andrew Oh is a really dedicated swimmer and he’s a great leader of our team, so it’s really fun to see that pay off for him.”
Oh attributed his successful effort in the 100 fly to his work with his club coach, and said he thought his underwater dolphin-kicking was what ultimately helped him take the race.
“Coming from a solid junior year, the day after that [state] meet, I was thinking I’d really like to win it next year,” Oh said. “It’s just something I had on my mind. Every morning practice, I woke up and I was working towards my goal to win the state title, so I had a lot of motivation coming in. I just felt strong and felt
confident and I kind of just let it all out when I looked at the scoreboard.”
