The National Wildlife Federation has recognized Bastyr University as an “exemplary and committed” school in its 2008 Nation Report Card on Sustainability in Higher Education, highlighting the school’s recycling and composting program, as well as its commitment to future green building and landscaping on campus.

The National Wildlife Federation has recognized Bastyr University as an “exemplary and committed” school in its 2008 Nation Report Card on Sustainability in Higher Education, highlighting the school’s recycling and composting program, as well as its commitment to future green building and landscaping on campus.

Bastyr was also runner up in the academic category for Washington CEO Magazine’s Green Washington Awards, and the school’s Center for Natural Health in Seattle earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Commercial Interiors certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Fall-cleaning events on tap

The city of Bothell is providing two opportunities on Sept. 20 for residents to clean out their homes and prevent identity theft.

A fall recycling event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University of Washington, Bothell/Cascadia Community College south parking lot (11125 N.E. 180th St.). The semi-annual event allows residents to dispose of car batteries, passenger tires, refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, fluorescent light bulbs and tubes and propane tanks for a nominal fee. Types of materials to be collected for free include: car oils, anti-freeze, oil filters, lead acid and alkaline batteries, construction debris, untreated wood, garden and grass clippings, asphalt, concrete, scrap metal and ceramic fixtures. The service is available to Bothell residents. No commercial customers or commercial vehicles will be allowed.

A free document-destruction event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bothell City Hall (18305 101st Ave. N.E.). Residents can destroy up to two copy-paper-sized-sized boxes (12 inch by 15 inch by 10 inch) or three paper grocery bags of their residential records such as bank statements, ATM receipts and old tax records. This service will destroy records on the premises and recycle the material. Citizens must bring photo ID for residency verification.

Country Village hosts Koi show

The 17th Annual Koi Show at Country Village will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 6 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 7. The event features a juried Koi competition and sales. Admission is free, and specialists are on hand to answer questions. For additional information, call (425) 483-0323.

Pvt. Sammons completes Army basic training

Army Pvt. Andrew Sammons has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. He is the son of George and Linda Sammons of Bothell.
