Cascadia Community College recently received a $50,000 grant from Washington Campus Compact (WACC) and Learn and Serve America to promote and expand service learning on campus. As part of the grant, Cascadia will partner with University of Washington, Bothell on events and projects. This is the third Learn and Serve grant awarded to Cascadia.

Cascadia will use the new grant to develop more service-learning courses for students and continue existing ones, provide professional development for faculty in service-learning and strengthen partnerships with community organizations and local leaders.

Service-learning courses combine community-service work with classroom instruction. The community-service work is intended to give students a better sense of the issues facing their communities and to further their understanding of course material.

A highlight of Cascadia and UW-Bothell’s collaboration will occur in late October when the schools jointly bring Nadinne Cruz to campus to speak and consult regarding service-learning opportunities for college students.
