The CDC is warning consumers and retailers about an outbreak of Listeriosis monocytogenes infections, or Listeriosis, linked to pre-packaged Caramel Apples.

So far, there have been 28 cases total in 10 states, with five deaths reported from this outbreak. Listeriosis was linked to at least four of the five deaths that have been reported.

Those who are at the most risk of illness are pregnant women (no miscarriages reported) or newborn infants, older adults, and adults with weakened immune systems.

Apples, in and of themselves, do not appear to be linked to this outbreak, merely the caramel coated, prepackaged variety.

According to the CDC website, the symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea and diarrhea. Pregnant woman may experience flu-like symptoms with serious and rare infections can cause issues with the pregnancy, whereas others may get headaches, stiff necks, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions in addition to the fever and muscle aches.

The CDC is recommending that commercially produced, prepackaged caramel apples not be consumed. Listeria can cause a serious, life threatening illness so the CDC urges consumers to see the doctor if they have had any of the symptoms.

There has been one case of Listeriosis reported in Washington State.
