Celebrate human rights day with Snohomish County, community Dec. 10.

The Snohomish County Human Rights Commission is hosting a celebration commemorating the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Human Rights Day from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at Evergreen Middle School in Everett.

The Snohomish County Human Rights Commission is hosting a celebration commemorating the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Human Rights Day from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at Evergreen Middle School in Everett. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Fifty years of the Civil Rights Act of 1964: the Unfinished Agenda.”

The Dec. 10 event will feature music provided by Fort Lewis’ Army Band. Speakers include Snohomish County Executive John Lovick, educator Karen Shoaf-Mitchell on human trafficking in the Northwest, and Paul Pitre, Dean of Washington State University’s North Puget Sound and Everett University Center, on the topic of pathways to higher education.

The family-friendly event also will include performances and presentations by local students, refreshments from Nomad Curbside’s Mobile Kitchen, music by Fiesta Mexicana Mariachi Band, and activity bags for kids.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted three years after the end of World War II. The 30-article declarative intended to prevent a repeat of the brutality of war. The United Nations brought attention to the atrocities that reigned death on more than 50 million people during World War II.
