Descend into Hell at Bastyr University’s Haunted Trails in Kenmore

Those venturing out to the Haunted Trails this weekend are in for a hellish experience.

The theme for this year’s Bastyr University event is “Descend Into Hell,” and the trails will feature nine levels meant to depict each of the nine circles of Hell in Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno.” After walking through Hell, attendees will end their journey in a graveyard full of creepy creatures such as phantoms and zombies.

“We hope to be horrifying,” Bethany Waller, one of the Haunted Trails general managers, said.

Those looking for the clown tent that has been part of past Haunted Trails events may be disappointed, as due to the recent uptick of suspicious activity involving people dressed as clowns, the organizers have decided not to include them in this year’s iteration.

Due to the intensity of the Haunted Trails, event organizers discourage kids under the age of 12 from participating. However, they will allow 10- and 11-year-olds to participate when accompanied by an adult. No children age 9 or younger will be admitted.

In addition to the trails, there will be some family-friendly activities as part of the event. There will be Trick or Treating from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Bastyr University’s student housing, allowing kids to go from room to room to get treats, which will include candy, toys and stickers. Each room will have a different theme, and the cost for Trick or Treating is $5 per child. There will also be a kids’ carnival at the university from 5 to 8 p.m., with differing costs for the various activities.

The Haunted Trails event takes place Oct. 21-22, with the trails open from 7 to 11 p.m. Admission to the trails is $20. (The event also was scheduled for Oct. 14-15 but was cancelled due to inclement weather.)

Proceeds from the event are shared among the student employees to go toward tuition and study abroad programs. For more information or to buy tickets in advance (which is recommended), visit hauntedtrailsbu.org.
