Early morning fire in Bothell started by candle, ruled accidental

Fire investigators have ruled a two-alarm early-morning fire in Bothell accidental.

Fire investigators have ruled a two-alarm early-morning fire in Bothell accidental.

The Bothell Fire and E.M.S. was called to the Avana 522 Apartments at 4:30 a.m. on Friday morning and found smoke and flames coming from a the third floor corner unit of the complex.

“Firefighters made a quick attack, containing the fire quickly,” said Bothell Fire and E.M.S. spokesperson Kirsten Clemons in a release. “The residents of the affected building were awoken by smoke alarms and able to evacuate safely.”

The apartment complex is located on Northeast 180th Street in Bothell.

A couple stated that a candle left lit in their apartment may have started the blaze and fire investigators have corroborated that account as the cause of the blaze.

Clemons said that no firefighters or residents were injured in the fire or the response.

Woodinville Fire and Rescue, Northshore Fire Department, Kirkland Fire Department, Snohomish Fire District No. 7 and Shoreline Fire Department all responded to the fire.

Only one apartment is believed to have been damaged.

“We didn’t anticipate too much damage to the building and the couple where the fire began is going to stay with family in the area,” Clemons said.

“The city of Bothell Fire and E.M.S. wants to remind citizens the importance of working smoke detectors and remembering to check the batteries at least twice a year,” the release states. “It is recommended homes should have a smoke alarm inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.”
