Finding calm in the economic storm

Are you feeling anxious and burdened by our current economic climate?

Are you feeling anxious and burdened by our current economic climate?

Times of uncertainty and change are inevitable in the human experience — inside and outside of economic realms. While it is not preferable or in our best interest to live from a state of constant adjustment and change, there will be seasons where these aspects will be present. Whether experienced in short or long durations, it is valuable to remember times of stress or transition are temporary. Such times will most likely give way to more preferred ways of living in the future — after the storm has passed.

I offer the following recommendations:

Get to bed

It is imperative that stressful times are met head-on with adequate sleep. Our ability to sleep thoroughly and be fully rested is crucial in our ability to battle stressful encounters. Ensuring we have entered cycles of deep sleep through the night is not to be underestimated. Without proper rest, we cannot expect our bodies to regulate emotions or respond sufficiently to life’s demands.

Eat healthful

For most, stress affects the appetite. For some, the appetite is lost completely or struggles to exist in its usual form. For others, the appetite doesn’t seem to be satisfied. Food is either ignored, resisted or indulged. When the body fails to have its nutritional needs met in healthful ways, the body does not have adequate resources to combat stress or address necessary tasks. Be intentional about eating well and nourishing your body. Comfort foods don’t count — they are a short-term indulgence, but not helpful in the long-term battle of overcoming life’s stressors.

Engage the body

When faced with stressful times, it is important that we engage our body in a number of ways. Intentionally participating in deep breathing and exercise is beneficial in helping the body to process emotion and actively work through stress.

Be honest

When faced with stressful situations or hardships, it can be tempting to adopt an attitude of being “fine” and “having everything under control.” At times this may be true. At other times, this is not the case. If the latter is true, we need to be honest with ourselves and with others. It is only upon reflection and examination that we can care for ourselves well, move differently through stressful times and ask those in our lives to journey with us in helpful ways.

Reach out

While there are some stressors in life that require our attention alone, we are not intended to battle seasons of stressful uncertainty or change without the support and encouragement of others. Stress or crisis may tempt some to retreat and seek isolation. Resist this temptation. Reach out to those in your life who love and care for you.

Wherever you might find comfort, I wish you well in taking good care of yourself as you seek calm in the storm and trust in the hope of brighter days ahead.
