The following is a release from Snohomish County Fire District 1:

Snohomish County Fire District 1 Commissioners re-elected David Chan to serve as board chair and Bob Meador to serve as vice chair for 2014. The election took place Jan. 7 at the board’s first meeting of the year.

Also at the meeting, Commissioners Jim Kenny and Jim McGaughey were sworn-in. Both were elected to six-year terms in November. Kenny, an attorney employed by the City of Seattle, has been a commissioner since 2003. McGaughey was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board in December.

This will be Chan’s fourth consecutive one-year term as chair. Chan has been a commissioner for eight years. A resident of the Lake Stickney area, he is a business consultant and certified public accountant.

Meador, who was re-elected in November, returns as vice chair. He was first elected as a commissioner in 1987, but stepped down in 1991 to take a job as the fire chief of the Lynnwood Fire Department. He retired after 30 years in the fire service. Meador returned to the Fire District 1 board in 2008.

“I am both humbled and honored that my fellow commissioners re-elected me to be the chair,” Chan said. “The board is encouraged to see signs of economic recovery. We’ve been able to hold down our budget during the last few years as revenue declined. While there are positive signs of a turn-around, we will continue to take a fresh approach and be creative in finding ways to deliver our service efficiently and effectively. I also hope to bring a positive approach to working with our union and staff. One of our first priorities is continuing to improve our relationships with our neighboring cities. Interagency cooperation in the fire service and sharing of resources can create better services.”

The Board of Commissioners is responsible for defining the fire district’s long-term vision, approving the budget and for adopting policies to be implemented by administrative staff. Meetings take place on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Fire District 1 Headquarters, 12425 Meridian Ave. S, Everett. Work sessions take place at 6 p.m. on the second and third Tuesday of each month. All board meetings are open to the public. Fire District 1 is the largest provider of fire and emergency medical services in the county. With 12 fire stations staffed around the clock, Fire District 1 serves nearly 195,000 residents of unincorporated south Snohomish County, north unincorporated Bothell, Brier, Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace.
