After a record-setting performance Friday night during the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University, Inglemoor High School senior Ashley Nichols has been named the women’s track athlete of the week in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Nichols broke a 29-year-old school record in the 10,000 meters by about 54 seconds, with her time of 36:36 provisionally qualifying her for the NCAA Championships and bettering her previous personal best by about two minutes. She was sixth among Division II runners and finished 25th of 34 overall.

After the first two weeks of the outdoor season, Nichols ranks seventh on the NCAA Division II performance list in the 10,000.

Nichols’ senior season has included a second-place finish in the 5,000 at the Northeast-10 Indoor Championships, a sixth-place showing in the Northeast-10 Cross Country Championships and an eighth-place finish in the NCAA East Regional in cross country.

This Saturday, Nichols will compete in the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational.
