A Kenmore man has claimed a $1 million second tier Powerball prize from the May 18 drawing. He claimed the prize on June 7 after matching all five numbers minus the Powerball number.

It was the same record-breaking drawing that saw a woman from Florida match all the numbers to win the $600 million jackpot.

He realized he was Washington’s newest millionaire when he went to a Washington’s Lottery retailer to check his ticket.

“I couldn’t believe it and neither did the teller,” said the man through a Washington State Lottery spokesperson. The man’s name has not been released.

Directly after realizing he had the winning numbers, he went home to reveal the news to his wife and two children.

“My wife also couldn’t believe it,” the man said. “She kissed the ticket before I took it to the store, so she’ll be doing that every time now.”

He and his wife plan to take a family vacation with their twin daughters and buy a new home with the prize. They’re also eager to set up college funds for both children and invest in their retirement. Both plan to continue working.

The man purchased the winning ticket at the Sid’s Handy Mart on Meridian Avenue South in Bothell.

This was the first time the man had ever purchased a Powerball ticket, although he usually plays Mega Millions and Lotto every Friday.

“I’ll be adding Powerball to the mix,” the man said.

This is his first big win.
