Regional Mitigation Plan open house
The city of Kenmore, in cooperation with the Emergency Services Coordinating Agency and 13 partner agencies, is in the process of updating the Regional Mitigation Plan. The plan is part of the overall emergency management strategy and provides the framework for natural hazards mitigation projects. The current plan was adopted in 2004. The city invites the public to provide feedback on the updated mitigation plan at an open house from 5-6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Northshore Utility District, 6830 N.E. 185th St.
Hazard mitigation planning is designed to save lives and property, reduce vulnerability to future hazards, facilitate post-disaster funding, speed recovery, demonstrate commitment to improving community health and safety and demonstrate accountability and regional coordination.
Each jurisdiction is responsible for mitigation projects within their scope and boundaries, such as capital improvements, mapping or training. This includes identifying, prioritizing, funding, completing and evaluating mitigation projects. Jurisdictions often seek grant funds to help pay for mitigation projects, and a mitigation plan is required for jurisdictions to receive federal grant funds.
The plan can be reviewed online at www.cityofkenmore.com/regionalmitigationplan or copies are available at City Hall. Comments should be received by Sept. 18. The City Council will be requested to take action on Sept. 28 to authorize submitting the plan to the state of Washington and FEMA for review. Once that review is complete, the City Council will have the opportunity to review any recommended amendments and adopt the plan.
Bastyr University master-plan public hearing
The Bastyr University master-plan hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Northshore Utility District, 6830 N.E. 185th St. The Bastyr master plan is a 10-year plan for proposed development. The plan includes the addition of 134 student-housing beds, approximately 40,000 square feet of new academic space, extended on-site pedestrian and auto circulation and parking facilities including structured parking. The proposal also includes amendments to the city’s Comprehensive Plan and development regulations for the site. Kenmore Play Day
The community is invited to participate in the first-ever Kenmore Play Day on Sept. 19 at the city’s three most recently remodeled parks. Residents are encouraged to visit Kenmore Elementary School, Log Boom Park or Rhododendron Park from 1-3 p.m. to see the improvements.
Mayor David Baker will also lead an adult walk from Log Boom Park at 9 a.m. The walk will proceed to the Kenmore Community Club. The Community Club is hosting a pancake breakfast from 8-11 a.m. for $5, and a car show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit http://playday.kaboom.org/projects/365.
