Kenmore Waterfront Activities Center offers new water sports program

The Kenmore Waterfront Activities Center officially opened its doors last month at Squire’s Landing Park and is now offering sprint canoe and kayak training for youth and dragon boat practices for youth and adults with no prior experience necessary.

The Kenmore Waterfront Activities Center officially opened its doors last month at Squire’s Landing Park and is now offering sprint canoe and kayak training for youth and dragon boat practices for youth and adults with no prior experience necessary.

Flatwater racing, or sprint canoe and kayak racing on calm water, is a sport that combines skill, teamwork, endurance and strength in single-, double- and four-person events. Lifelong friendships are formed, experiences are shared, and character is built.

Geared toward youth ages 9-12, this coed program is taught by the former US national team member and team coach, Dan Henderson. During the month of September, practices are from 4:30–6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The program requires the ability to swim 50 yards, and being comfortable in and around the water. The ancient Chinese folk ritual of dragon boat racing is now becoming an internationally practiced sport. Come learn about the history and significance of dragon boating and build relationships with other paddlers. It’s fun and competitive and suitable for all ages.

Practices are currently from 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays. The first three practices are free for people 12 and older (12-18 require permission). No registration is required – simply show up!
