The official filing period came and went on Friday for the 2013 election and the wild ride ended with only one race in Bothell and one council member opting out of his seat.

The biggest news of the day was the silence from Councilman Patrick Ewing. The two-term councilman was not listed on the King County Elections website as running for his Position 5 seat on the Bothell City Council. Ewing also did not have any paperwork filed with the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission to run for re-election. Ewing was first elected in 2005 and won again in 2009. The Reporter was not immediately able to contact Ewing for comment.

The apparent vacancy in Position 5 created an opportunity for three candidates to run without challenging an incumbent. But the three candidates will trigger a primary in August.

Bothell resident and Planning Commissioner Steven A. Booth, 57, filed to run with the PDC on May 9 but did not choose a specific position at the time. King County Elections states he is running for Position 5.

Tris Samberg, who has run for council in the past, has also thrown her hat in the ring for Position 5, along with newcomer Nadia K. Mustafa, according to King County Elections.

Position 1 incumbent Joshua Freed, Position 3 incumbent Del Spivey and Position 7 incumbent Thomas E. Agnew are all listed as running in 2013 by King County Elections but all will run unopposed.

Only Freed and Spivey have filed paperwork with the PDC and both have served on the council since 2006. Freed filed his paperwork with the PDC on April 22, while Spivey filed on Feb. 15. Spivey also lists current Mayor Mark Lamb as his treasurer.
