Pacific Islamic group celebrates American Independence Day

In pursuance of its primary aim of facilitating integration of Muslim Americans in the mainstream of American life, Bothell-based PICACS (Pacific Islamic Community and Cultural Services) organized a musical/cultural evening with singer Alamgir during July to celebrate American Independence Day. An estimated crowd of more than 350 attended the show at the Kirkland Performance Center.

Alamgir, a south Asian pop idol, sang in English, Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi and Urdu at the event. The program also included children in their traditional dresses singing the American national anthem and answering questions about America/Washington state history and geography. PICACS also recognized three outstanding Muslim community workers of Seattle area: Habib M Habib, Munir Rizvi and Aurangzeb Akbar.

Ethan Casey, a well-known Seattle journalist and author of books on Pakistan, also spoke at the event.
