After raising $160,000 for a new electronic scoreboard at Pop Keeney Field, a group of Northshore School District alumni are aiming to place what they’ve dubbed a “Wall of Honor” at the stadium.

According to organizers, the wall would honor accomplished graduates from Northshore’s four high schools, as well as faculty and staff members from around the district.

The group is accepting nominations for the wall through June 30.

“This is not an athletic hall of fame even though there will be athletes who deservedly make it onto the wall,” said Al Strand, a co-chair of the wall fund-raising drive. “We’re talking about people the caliber of Pulitzer Prize winners, Rhodes Scholars, Congressional Medal of Honor winners, notable scientists, adventurers, entrepreneurs, entertainers and distinguished politicians.

“We want people to look at the wall and say, ‘Wow, I didn’t know she grew up in Northshore!’ or ‘Look what this guy did.’”

A 1963 Bothell High School grad, George Selg said there are any number of people who are worthy of mention on the wall.

Selg didn’t want to skew any nominating process, but Selg mentioned U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, a couple of Pulitzer Prize winners and at least two Rhodes Scholars as having graduated from Northshore schools.

Selg said he really sees the Wall of Honor as a continuation of the scoreboard project he spearheaded.

He added his hope is the wall will serve as an inspiration to current Northshore students.

Nomination forms for the 2010 Wall of Honor are available on the Northshore School District Web site, www.nsd.org, or at the district administrative center, 3330 Monte Villa Parkway, Bothell.

Those interested also can call Selg at (425) 481-1475 or Strand at (425) 877-9002.

A committee of alumni and community and school-district leaders will select inductees. Names will be added yearly.

If all goes as planned, the Wall of Honor will be unveiled in September. The wall will be placed at the north end of Pop Keeney Field near the new entrance.

Selg and Strand are looking to raise between $15,000 and $20,000 by the end of July. They have some $5,000 already on hand, according to Selg.

Tax-deductible donations can be sent to the Cougar Football Club, Wall of Honor Fund, P.O. Box 42, Bothell, WA 98041.
