The Northshore Fire Department has offered numerous tips for keeping safe during the holiday season.

Firstly, officials say select a fresh Christmas tree that is kept in water at all times. Fresh trees will have green needles that don’t fall off easily.

When you find the right tree, don’t put it up too early or leave it up for more than two weeks. Dried-out trees can ignite easily and boost a fire by spreading it rapidly to other combustible materials.

Also, place your Christmas tree in a safe place, away from heat sources such as fireplaces and heating vents.

As for the lights on your tree, fire officials suggest maintaining them properly. Inspect your strands of lights to ensure they don’t have frayed wires, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets or other signs of excessive wear. Officials don’t advise leaving lights on after you go to bed or when you are not at home.
