Police say the man shot and killed by a Snohomish County deputy just outside Bothell Dec. 31 had stabbed the father of his girlfriend in the face with a screwdriver.

A public information officer for the Everett Police Department, Sgt. Robert Goetz said investigators found one screwdriver next to the suspect’s body and another near the apartment, which was the site of an alleged domestic disturbance at about 1:17 a.m. Dec. 31.

As of deadline for this issue, the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office still had not released the name of the deceased pending positive identification and notification of his family. Additionally, Goetz said no further information would be released on the shooting until after officials had spoken further with the deputy involved.

Deputies from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 20200 block of Bothell Everett Highway — outside Bothell proper in unincorporated Snohomish County — for the report of a disturbance at the Archstone Apartments.

According to Goetz, shortly after the original call, deputies were advised by dispatch that the call had been upgraded to an assault with a weapon. In a press release, Goetz outlined what happened next as follows. When the first deputy arrived, he located three individuals, all males, in an outdoor parking lot near Archstone building 14. One of the males had a puncture wound to the face.

Again according to Goetz, a confrontation occurred between the deputy and one of the males allegedly involved in the reported assault. Goetz said shots were fired by the deputy, striking the suspect, who medics later pronounced dead at the scene.

Goetz said officials have determined that the three persons involved in the original call are related and live in the same apartment. They have been identified only as a woman, her father and her boyfriend. The female was not outside at the time of the shooting. The man who was shot is the female’s boyfriend. The third male outside at the time of the shooting is being labeled a witness. According to Goetz, he told detectives he felt threatened by the suspect and that his life was in danger.

Detectives have not released any other details about the interview with the witness.

The female and her father were transported to the hospital by aid car. The father was being treated for a puncture wound to the face. It is believed that his wounds are not life threatening. The female, who is pregnant, was transported as a precaution, Goetz said.

The deputy involved in this incident was not injured. He is in his mid-30s and has been with the Sheriff’s Office for more than two years. He was placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice in such cases.

According to Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Rebecca Hover, several police departments eventually became involved in the incident. Everett officials were handling all media inquiries.
