Teens will test their communication skills at Puget Sound Speech and Debate qualifier

Let the speaking and debating begin. On Feb. 18-20, about 179 students will convene to test their communication skills at the Puget Sound Speech and Debate qualifier at CrossPointe Church in Bothell.

On Feb. 18-20, about 179 students will convene to test their communication skills at the Puget Sound Speech and Debate qualifier at CrossPointe Church in Bothell.

These students joined homeschool speech and debate clubs to gain theory of the subject and to practice their skills. This tournament is expected to qualify 75 students to the regional tournament, and from there, approximately 5 percent will qualify to nationals.

This year, students debate the philosophy of competition versus cooperation, or more concretely advocate or oppose a policy on the environment. Speech competitors will entertain attendees with a glimpse from literature; persuade them on the value of the right to a free trial, as well as other types of speeches.

National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) sanctions this tournament where students learn to communicate to a variety of audiences.
