Three Northshore employees receive awards for saving the life of a colleague

The Northshore Fire Department honored four Northshore School District teachers for saving a colleague's life.

Three Northshore School District health and fitness teachers, Tom Day from Timbercrest Junior High School, Paul Jensen and Jeff Varden, both from Canyon Park Junior High School, received awards for exemplary action from the Bothell Fire Department in a commendation ceremony at Canyon Park Junior High School on March 14.

The three men came to the aid of Don Wardlow, Canyon Park Junior High School health and fitness teacher, when he suffered a heart attack while working out before school on Feb. 1. The men administered CPR and used the school’s AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) devise until paramedics arrived and transported Wardlow to the hospital. The paramedics credited the men for saving his life. Thanks to their quick response Don did not incur any permanent damage.

An AED is a portable device that checks the heart’s rhythm. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrests. All Northshore secondary schools are equipped with an AED devise.
