On Saturday, November 10, 2018, at the age of 84, Dorothy Ann Ackerman passed away peacefully with both her husband Bernie Ackerman and daughter Anna Marie Ackerman at her bedside. Dorothy was born on July 17, 1934 to parents Edward and Beryl Smith in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. During WWII, the family moved to Tracyton, Washington because he worked at the Bremerton shipyards.
After the war, they relocated to Seattle where Dorothy attended Lincoln High School and later, the University of Washington, earning a degree in Home Economics. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and later served on the Alumni Management Board.
Dorothy met Bernie while student teaching at Bothell High School. She then taught one year in Renton before marrying Bernie on June 15, 1957.
Later, she taught tailoring in the Northshore Adult Education Program.
Dorothy had a very inquisitive mind and was unafraid to try new and different things. She loved gardening and was a wonderful cook and most gracious hostess and she was extremely supportive of Bernie and his work.
Dorothy will forever be remembered by the many lives that were brightened by her warm smile and sense of humor. She had a warm and caring heart. She was particularly fond of cats, however, many raccoons and squirrels soon discovered a ready handout from her at the backdoor.
At Dorothy’s request, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of her life, however, will be announced after the holidays.
Dorothy will be cremated and laid to rest in the Woodinville Cemetery in Woodinville, Washington.
