Kenmore wins, everybody wins

News flash: Kenmore does it again with Seattle Magazine naming the city No. 1 in area places to live. First, Family Circle magazine gave Kenmore the nod as one of the best spots to live in the country, and now Mayor David Baker and crew are back at it again.

Congrats all around.

However, some of the criteria for putting Kenmore in the spotlight are actually shared with Bothell and Woodinville.

In both lists, stellar schools were a major factor — and it wasn’t just Kenmore schools that were named, but the entire Northshore School District, which includes Bothell and Woodinville, as well.

Also, in the Seattle Magazine press release, close proximity to the University of Washington, Bothell campus was another factor in putting Kenmore on top. With the name Bothell in there, it’s hard to ignore its location, and Woodinville sits closer to that campus than Kenmore.

What I’m getting at here is that the Northshore community is a conglomeration of the three cities in many ways. Especially with school academics and sports, as evidenced by Inglemoor, Bothell and Woodinville highs sharing Pop Keeney Field for home football and soccer games. You don’t get any more tight-knit than that.

So a Kenmore win is also a Bothell and Woodinville victory in a sense, so everyone should be proud of their contributions to the Northshore community.

Mariners: playoffs?

Speaking of sports, 10 percent of you voted in last week’s online poll that the Mariners will push through to the American League playoffs this season. For now, it doesn’t look good, but anything can happen in baseball — especially when playoff time rolls around and your team is still within striking distance.

My Detroit Tigers are hanging on to first in the AL Central, but it’s going to be nail biting the rest of the way. If the Mariners were in our division, they’d be in the playoff hunt, but that’s the way it goes. Baseball isn’t fair, but we still love to watch. Painful yet fun all in one — especially when the Tigers took two of three games from the Mariners this week!

On the local sports front, keep an eye peeled for our Sept. 2 edition, which will feature a fall sports preview focused on football. As the season rolls on, all sports will be in the spotlight, as always.

Let the games begin.
