Some like it, some don’t: that’s the way of the world | Editor’s Notebook

Some stories are not for everyone. But that doesn’t mean we don’t report on them because they’re controversial or may offend someone.

Some stories are not for everyone.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t report on them because they’re controversial or may offend someone.

In a letter below and posted on our Web site last week, the writer is upset with our coverage of The Paradise Espresso “costume-theme” stand in Bothell.

The Reporter received two complaints about the stand because of its location near family-friendly Country Village. When you get one call about something, you may sit on it for a bit and contemplate doing a story, but when you get two or more, it’s time for action.

It’s an even story (just the way it should always be): information from both callers, a chat with the owner and a quote from the city of Bothell.

Just because we covered this community story that not everyone approves of doesn’t mean we’re not a credible news source — we’re just doing our jobs like we always do: reporting on the news fairly and accurately.

And for the record, that story does involve “real reporting, real people and real opinions.”

For every harsh letter we receive, we get many positive notes in return from readers who enjoy our stories and reporting.

I’ve been told that when you get feedback on both sides of the coin, then you’re doing something right.

Web-site comments aplenty

I’d like to thank everyone who’s been making comments via Facebook on our Web site recently.

As expected, The Paradise Espresso story received the most comments — 12 — in addition to a handful of shares.

We like to keep the site interactive with both positive and critical comments on our stories — it shows that readers are passionate about the issues and will keep returning to our site to what’s happening and what others are saying.

Keep it up!
